It isn’t called correspondence school anymore, and the stigma that is causing you to question distance education is vanishing. Today, getting a degree online is an option millions of people throughout the world take advantage of.

Education And Third World Countries

One of the greatest challenges facing third world countries today is the curse of illiteracy and ignorance. While the government and authorities in these countries are grappling with this problem to the extent possible, the current uncertain economic scenario is making things very difficult in successfully running long term primary and secondary education programs in the third world countries. These programs need to be continued for long periods of time and are very capital and people intensive. The infrastructure needs to be built for teaching children; the school building should have the basic requirements like desks, fans, chairs, table, black and white boards, libraries, computers, internet connections, playgrounds for children. Apart from these infrastructures a lot of recurring expenditure also needs to be arranged by way of teachers and administrative and non-administrative personnel.

While all these are indeed Herculean tasks calling for a massive efforts starting from the ground level, on the other hand we need to understand the socio economic reality. In spite of the best efforts by governments and various NGOs, many parents belonging to the weaker sections of society are in no mood to send there wards to school for education. They feel that sending their children for school would deprive them of one more earning member of the family. This is because most of these children come from agrarian backgrounds and hence spend a lot of time helping their parents.

However, things are starting to look up in many third world countries with active and aggressive participation of both the public and private enterprises. This is too big a job to be left to the government alone and as responsible citizens, big corporate houses should show more interest in this.

Though many definitions have been given for education, simply put education is nothing but gathering worldly general knowledge and being in a position to make use of such knowledge for personal and social growth, apart from being able to pass such knowledge to others for their growth. Investing in education and human capital is of paramount importance. No society can aim to grow in life without putting this basic requirement in place. Education helps a person to move away from the narrow prisms of language, culture, religion, color, caste and creed and broadens a person’s horizon and helps him to connect better with the outside world. While all this is fine, education should not be all about equipping a person to become materially successful. It should also teach him or her good morals, good social conduct, respect for other persons’ views and above all respect for the environment.

Requirements to Become a Teacher

To become an elementary school teacher there are several educational requirements that must be met. To teach in a public school setting an individual must become licensed to be a teacher. This usually is accomplished by completing a bachelor’s degree in education as well as completing a student teaching assignment. Although, in a private setting licensure is not always required, but most private teachers also hold a bachelor’s degree in education.

There may be other criteria that must be met for the state one is seeking licensure as licensure requirements for teachers vary from state to state. However, besides having a bachelor’s degree in education and have completed a student teaching assignment, it is also expected that an individual must also have a passing grade on a teaching exam as well as have a teaching certificate. It is also generally understood that to keep a teaching license individuals must keep up with continuing educational requirements specified either by the state where licensure is being sought or the school in which the teacher is teaching.

If one wishes to teach at a different level than what they are licensed to teach it may be necessary to obtain additional education. Many higher level teaching certifications required a master’s degree in education or at the least a bachelor’s degree in education or the specific field that they will be teaching. Prospective teachers may also be required to take additional training or education in teaching techniques.

Once an individual has completed the educational requirements for teaching and obtained the necessary certification required in their state, it is now time to head out into the real world and look for a job. If one was successful in their student teaching assignment and has obtained positive referrals from the teaching staff that they worked with during this assignment it will make the job hunt much easier. It may be necessary, however, to take substitute teaching assignments in the meantime while searching for a permanent position. This is recommended to keep working with the educational system and provides the experience necessary to land the perfect teaching position!
