The world might have gone through a 360 degree turn as far as our way of life when compared to say some 50 to 60 years ago. During those days, radio perhaps was the only companion for man and gradually TV started occupying his drawing and bed room, slowly driving away radio. But in spite of the communication revolution which was happening at the point of time, books continued to be the closest companion for men. However, this has drastically changed today with the invasion of computer followed closely by the internet.

While technology has to change and old has to give way to the new, there are certain things which are timeless and which cannot be replaced. One such thing is books. Books continue to be good companions for human beings because of some qualities which are simply irreplaceable and timeless. There is a common belief amongst the younger generation that books are no longer a necessity and are slowly on the verge of extinction. For people with such thoughts we only have a wry smile to offer.

For those who are academically inclined books will continue to be an importance source of information and entertainment. There is no substitute for reading a crime thriller. You can watch the same book on the big screen, or on TV, or even on the computer, but the fact remains that the excitement that we get reading it from a novel is simply irreplaceable. However, there are some steps we as elders can do to reestablish to pride of place for books by making young children get into the habit of reading books. If this habit can be inculcated, certainly they will start liking books.

Recreation And Old Age

As society ages and slowly starts taking the first steps to the grave, there is a big problem of keeping these elder citizens happy and in good health. Recreational facilities for elderly people is of big importance if we are to grow as a balanced and well meaning society. It would be a crime and great depravation if the elder people were left to fend for themselves as far as creating recreational facilities are concerned. Elder people in today’s fast changing economic and social structure are often prone to a lot of mental turmoil and disturbance because of loneliness and lack of care even from their own sons and daughters. Many of them spend their last years of life in old-age homes or are dependent on some social welfare schemes to eke out a living.

Providing the right kind of recreational avenues for elderly people is very important because these people need lot of socializing because their kith and kin could be miles away from them. Though they might have spent their glorious years in service of mankind and society, today they are at the cross roads of life and many of them have a lot of time to spare. So as a responsible society, it is our duty to provide them with some avenues where they can do something constructive which is good for both their body and mind

There are a number of recreational activities that could be thought of for senior citizens and elderly people. Some of them could be travel programs where these privileged class should be given deep discounts and good bargains. They could be involved in volunteering services. Their experience, wisdom and compassion could be invaluable assets.

Though many definitions have been given for education, simply put education is nothing but gathering worldly general knowledge and being in a position to make use of such knowledge for personal and social growth, apart from being able to pass such knowledge to others for their growth. Investing in education and human capital is of paramount importance. No society can aim to grow in life without putting this basic requirement in place. However, giving education to all especially those belonging to the lower strata of society is a tough job and calls for a lot of determination, commitment and effort of all.

Many people question the wisdom of being educated and say that many people have achieved success in their lives without being open to the field of education. While this may be right, the number of such people is minuscule to say the least. Hence education has to be given the right importance it deserves. Education builds character, education opens the individual to a wider canvas of life and it helps the person to develop himself or herself into a complete personality. Education opens up new avenues of employment and income generation and helps give a better life to their children and others in the family.

Education helps a person to move away from the narrow prisms of language, culture, religion, color, caste and creed and broadens a person’s horizon and helps him to connect better with the outside world. While all this is fine, education should not be all about equipping a person to become materially successful. It should also teach him or her good morals, good social conduct, respect for other persons’ views and above all respect for the environment.

There is a grace period that students receive after they graduate from college that begins the moment they graduate. This time is called deferment.
